Blogiversary, Contest and FO

Happy 4th of July!  What an extraordinary country this is.

It was a year ago today that I was trying to figure out how to get this site up.  I gave myself a 50-50 chance.  I am so glad that I got it to work.  What I like best about blogging is the people that I have come to know and exchange comments with.

So for my contest, I am going to enter the names of the people who have left a comment on Hoc Age this past year.  If you haven’t left a comment or don’t remember if you have, you can leave one on this post and your name will be entered.  If you have left a comment in the past year and comment on this post, I will add your name twice.  The closing date for a comment to be entered in the contest is July 10th, 8 pm Alaska time.  The winning name will be chosen by one of my kids from out of a hat.

The prize will include the following.

A Ridge Ribbed Face Cloth Kit with a made in Alaska, Denali Dreams Handmade Soap
Smoked Wild Alaska King Salmon
A skein of Artyarn’s Silk Mohair, colour 408
A skein of Crystal Palace Yarn’s Cotton Chenille, colour 2342
3 skeins of Rowan, Kidsilk Haze, shade 633
A skein of Noro, Kureyon Sock Yarn, colour, S150

Now for a FO.

These lilacs have such a wonderful scent.

A closer look at the open diamond.

Pattern:  “Scarf with the open and solid diamond lace edging from Weldon’s, 1904”, pg 90 from Victorian Lace Today
Yarn:  Jagger Spun, Zephyr Wool/Silk, White, 1 skein (600 yards)
Needles:  Addi Lace Needles, US #5

Variations:  I knitted a narrower scarf with 3 repeats of Chart A, instead of 4 repeats.  The scarf that is pictured in the book on pg 91 is the narrower scarf, but it isn’t noted that it is different from the directions.  The border design is not symmetrical along the sides, so I ended the last repeat of Chart A on row 30, knitted the next row and then bound off.

This is the third project that I have knitted from “Victorian Lace Today”, I love the results, but I would recommend that before you start any project from this book, you should check this site  for a pdf of the errata.  Raverly is also a good resource for other knitters’ experiences with patterns from this book.

This scarf is a wedding gift for Rachel, the daughter of a very dear friend who will be getting married tomorrow.

Again, Happy 4th of July.
